Nutritional Choice of the Month - November 2006: Raspberries

I’ll start by confessing: I often spell this word incorrectly, and hopefully I’m not the only one.  Most raspberries are cultivated from June through October and contain phytonutrients (healthy chemicals derived from plant-based foods) called tannins that play a major role in antioxidant health.  Raspberries also contain ellagic acid, which is said to help attenuate cancer cell growth.  Loaded with vitamin C and fiber, one cup of raspberries contains only 60 calories and has 8 grams of fiber.

According to noted dietician Nancy Clark, raspberries rank 8th in terms of nutrient density for all fruits.  That is, nutrient dense foods give you the most nutrients for the fewest amount of calories.  They can be used on top of yogurt, in smoothies, or simply as a delicious snack on their own
