Exercise of the Month - October 2010:
“Benefits of Barefoot Training”

The release of the book “Born to Run” has spawned a huge increase in the number of people who engage in Barefoot Training (BT).  While I don’t necessarily agree with running barefoot for everyone, I do often advocate engaging in a select number of exercises with no shoes.  These include squat and deadlift variations.  There are many benefits to engaging in BT, which include the following:

  • BT increases sensory input- literally being closer to the ground improves proprioception, which can help prevent falls via improvements in balance.
  • BT increases lower leg strength
  • BT can be injury protective
